Terms of Service

Virtual Jaguar is free software. These terms are short: the licence says what you may do with it, you supply your own games, and it comes with no warranty.

Effective 2026-10-14. Applies to the Virtual Jaguar libretro core, the Virtual Jaguar desktop app and this website.

The licence

The core and the app are released under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (GPLv3). The full text is in the repository’s LICENSE file. It lets you run, study, change and share the software, and sets conditions when you pass it on. By using the software you accept those terms. Some parts the project bundles or builds against, such as rcheevos, SDL and Dear ImGui, carry their own licences, which apply to those parts.

No warranty

The software is provided as it is. Sections 15 (“Disclaimer of Warranty”) and 16 (“Limitation of Liability”) of the GPLv3 apply to everything you download from this project and are incorporated here by reference. In short: no guarantees that it works, that a game runs, or that your saves are safe, and no liability for damage from using it. Back up what matters to you.

Your games and BIOS files

The project does not provide, host or link to games. Use only game images, disc images and BIOS files you own and have the right to use, such as ones you made from your own cartridges and discs, or software its owner has released for this purpose. The app does not include Atari’s BIOS or any commercial game. You are responsible for following the copyright law that applies to you.

Third-party services

Some optional features connect to services the project does not run. The Privacy Policy lists them. Using them means accepting their rules: RetroAchievements for sign-in and achievements, including its rules on hardcore mode, and Discord for Rich Presence in app versions that have it. The project is not responsible for those services, their availability, or what they do with your data. Pictures shown in the app come from the libretro thumbnails project and are their creators’ work.

Trademarks

Atari and Jaguar are trademarks of their respective owners. Virtual Jaguar is an independent project with no affiliation with, or endorsement by, Atari or any current rights holder. Game titles and pictures belong to their owners. RetroAchievements, RetroArch, libretro and Discord are names of their respective owners too.

Changes and contact

These terms may change as the project does; the effective date above tells you which version you are reading, and the page’s history is in the repository. Questions: GitHub issues, which are public. The project is maintained by Joseph Mattiello.
